The Windows Mobile registry stores data about applications, drivers, user preferences, and other configuration settings. Windows Mobile implements the registry as a hive-based registry stored in files.

The registry is also used for system initialization. The registry can be loaded from and stored to another persistent storage device. The registry can exist as a file on any file system.
