Starting and stopping Server for NIS

You can use Services for UNIX Administration to start or stop Server for NIS. When Server for NIS is stopped, it will not respond to Network Information Service (NIS) requests from clients, including requests for password changes.

Even when Server for NIS is stopped, you can continue to make changes to NIS map data through Active Directory. It should be noted that UNIX-based computers will respond quite differently in this situation, however. If the NIS server is down on UNIX, changes to maps undertaken through make will not be updated in the NIS database.

In addition, when Server for NIS is stopped, NIS map changes will not be propagated to subordinate (slave) NIS servers running on UNIX. However, subordinate NIS servers running on Windows 2000 domain controllers will continue to receive updates.
